| What is Tattoo Removal
Tattoo removal is one of the fastest-growing cosmetic laser procedures in the United States. Advances in q-switched laser technology over the last two decades and an explosion in demand for a safe and effective option to remove unwanted tattoos has made laser tattoo removal the most attractive laser treatment for physicians and laser clinics.
Strong psychological motivations exist for laser tattoo removal. In good economies and bad, millions of tattoos are applied every year. A number of national surveys have found that almost a third of Americans now have a tattoo, and up to 50% will consider or want to have one or more tattoos removed in the future. In our tattoo removal clinics we've found the most common motivations for tattoo removal to be the following:
Name tattoos - a patient no longer wanting a tattoo with an ex's name
Change in lifestyle - a patient no longer wants to express themselves with body art, or don't like the message or style of this art
Tattoo location - the tattoo limits clothing options for men or women in social or professional settings; hurts job prospects
Poor quality/faded tattoo - tattoos do fade over time; others were poorly applied or didn't turn out right
Laser tattoo removal is able to eliminate tattoo ink through a series of laser treatments spaced four to six weeks apart. A q-switched tattoo removal laser directs pulses of light (at a specific wavelength for certain colors of ink) at tattoo ink, causing the ink to heat up and shatter. An immune response will help to flush away these shattered ink particles.
Tattoo removal lasers are able to remove unwanted tattoos without scarring or any long-term damage to the patient's skin. Until recently, some colors of tattoo ink were quite difficult to remove, and many dark tattoos would take an inordinately high number of sessions to be removed completely. The newest lasers have been able to overcome some of these obstacles, making it possible to with a single laser to remove tattoos from any patient.
